New Zealand Nuffield

Conference

Dunedin

Feb 29 - March 2 2008

The event will set out on Friday February 29 to South Otago, to visit one of New Zealand’s leading rural polytechnic’s, Telford. Hear something of Telford’s history, its deer, sheep and beef, dairy and equine on farm teaching programmes and much more.

With operating revenue of $11.45 million, gain awareness of its educational success and how full-time student numbers through out New Zealand equated to more than 29,000 actual students involved with this teaching unit in the past year.

Next onto eastern Southland, to a leading dairy farm to see 'cutting edge technology' in the milking shed, and to have explained and discussed how a unique system of effluent management can result in the capturing of methane gas for energy use on the farm.

Saturday March 1 will see a visit in the morning, to Invermay Research Station at Mosgiel. Invermay is AgResearch’s leading science centre, employing 130 staff on site.

Research on campus currently has emphasis on animal molecular biology, particularly genomics, but also in deer and sheep. Land management, biocontrol and biosecurity are also part of this Research Institute’s activities.

Scholars will have the opportunity to discuss with some of New Zealand’s top scientists, some of this “cutting edge technology”.

Saturday afternoon, the returning Scholars’ presentations will take place at the Southern Cross Hotel.

Saturday evening, a formal dinner, will be at New Zealand's only castle, Larnach Castle, out on the Dunedin Peninsular, an area also renowned for the only mainland albatross colony in the southern hemisphere. This will be an evening with a strong Scottish flavour.

Sunday morning, our Scholars Trust meeting will take place at the Southern Cross Hotel.

Take note of the dates now and keep the weekend free for this conference.
